Make a vCard QR code

  1. Enter a name, an organization or both. One of them is needed.
  2. Add any of: phone, email and website.
  3. Check the scan score, then download the PNG or SVG.
  4. Scan it with the camera app on two phones. Each should offer to add the contact with the right name, number and email.

The fields are name, organization, phone, email and website. There is no job title field, so put it after your company, such as "Martin Studio, Designer". There is no photo or address field either: a photo would make the code far too dense to scan.

Static, no tracking, no account

Your details are written into the code as a standard vCard (version 3.0, the format phones read). When someone scans it, their phone reads the card straight from the picture. The scan never touches our servers, so we cannot see it, count it or switch it off. You need no account to make one.

The trade-off is that a static code cannot change. If your phone number changes, you print a new code.

Rather change details without reprinting? Put them on a page you control and make a link code to that page, then make the link editable: 3 editable codes are free with an email.

Business card QR code: how big?

A vCard is denser than a link. Name, phone and email encode to 45 x 45 modules; adding an organization and a website makes 53 x 53. By the 10:1 rule on our size calculator, read at arm's length (25 cm), the short card needs a code 4.5 cm wide (5.3 cm with its white margin) and the full card 5.3 cm (6.1 cm).

A standard North American business card is 3.5 x 2 inches (8.9 x 5.1 cm), so by that rule neither card fits: even the short one needs 5.3 cm with its margin. The rule is cautious and many printers go smaller, but print one and test it with two phones before you order 500.

Three ways to make it fit a card

  • Leave out fields you do not need. Name, phone and email are enough for most people.
  • Put your website in the code instead of a full vCard: a short link is the smallest code, and the page can hold everything else.
  • Print the vCard code on the back of the card at a comfortable size, or on a flyer or sign where there is room.

Questions

What is a vCard QR code?

A QR code that holds a contact card in the vCard format. When someone scans it, their phone offers to save you as a contact, with no typing.

Is the vCard QR code free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no ads, and the code never expires.

Does the code track who scans it?

No. It is a static code, so a scan goes from the picture to the phone and never passes through us. That also means we cannot count scans.

Can I change my details after printing?

Not in a vCard code: the details are inside the picture, so new details need a new code.

What size should a business card QR code be?

By the 10:1 rule, a vCard with name, phone and email needs about 4.5 cm at arm's length. A short link needs 2.5 cm. Print a test and scan it with two phones.
